“No matter how empty it may be, this is still my heart. There’s still some human warmth in it.”
-Haruki Murakami
Dark romance offers readers a unique opportunity to explore complex themes and dynamics that differ from what we typically expect in real life relationships. While terms like ‘romance’ and ‘boy love’ are often used broadly, the stories on this list focus on the intricate and sometimes unsettling connections between characters. While graphic novels that tackle darker subjects are common, those that truly capture a sense of tension and discomfort are much rarer to find. If you’re looking for a story that pushes boundaries and offers a more thought-provoking reading experience, you might find something on this list for you.

Under the Green Light by JAXX
Content Warning: Sexual content and drug abuse.
This manhwa has earned its popularity for good reason. From the start, a museum curator takes us on a tour, introducing Giovanni Vanderbilt’s Albert of Madalena Island. A symbol of obsession, desire, and the blurred line between reality and illusion, this moment sets the stage for the gripping story ahead. It’s rare to find a graphic novel that so masterfully employs literary techniques, making this one a standout. The protagonist is a fascinating mix of delusion, passion, and eerie calm. Is he just a young man in love, or is there something darker at play? While not technically horror, and likely the least provocative on this list, Under the Green Light carries an unsettling atmosphere that echoes the chilling vibes of John Fowles’ 1963 thriller The Collector.
The Black Mirror by Muhwa, Sugeun
Content Warning: Sexual content, blood, and gore.
I can’t recommend The Black Mirror enough for its incredible ability to make you feel truly uncomfortable. Many animated works don’t quite provoke real fear, but this graphic novel is different. It’s the first one I’ve read as an adult that genuinely gave me a sense of unease. It’s a high that I am constantly chasing. The artwork creates a haunting, nightmarish world that immerses the protagonist in eerie, unsettling experiences. Without giving too much away, Tae Joon runs into a childhood friend—an encounter that completely changes his life. Even the more intense scenes leave you with a deep sense of anxiety, heightening the psychological horror throughout. As the story unfolds, both Tae Joon and the reader must confront the fine line between reality and…something else.
You can find the 16+ and all-ages version on Tappytoon.
The Warehouse by Killa+Whale
Content Warning: Sexual Assault, physical violence, kidnapping, and confinement.
The Warehouse is by far the most chilling story on this list. It’s important to note that while it’s included here, The Warehouse is NOT a romance or even a tale of boyish affection—it’s a psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. What makes this story so captivating is the mystery behind the abductor’s motives. You’ll find yourself constantly questioning why the protagonist is being held captive and what’s really behind his torment. This story is full of twists and turns, so be ready for an unpredictable ride. If you’re still intrigued—despite the content warnings—you can find a hard copy on Amazon.
Itou-san by Kuraka Sui
Content Warning: sex work and sexual violence.
An emotionally powerful story of imperfect love and sorrow comes to life in Itou-San. Kuraka Sui, the mangaka, beautifully captures the complexity of love beyond surface-level attraction, a theme that really struck a chord with me. The love in this tale is intense but ultimately shows that affection alone isn’t enough to overcome everything. The artwork is equally stunning, with its elegance perfectly matching the story’s bittersweet and melancholic tone.
Kyuuso Ha Cheese no Yume Omiru by Mizushiro Setona
Content Warning: Sexual content, infidelity
Kyuuso Ha Cheese No Yume Omiru stands out in the dark romance genre, exploring unconventional and thought-provoking themes with deeply flawed characters. The mangaka masterfully presents a beautiful, unorthodox love story. If infidelity is a deal breaker for you, though, this one may not be for you, as it plays a central role in the plot. The two main characters are toxic to each other, yet their intense devotion keeps them locked in a chaotic, passionate relationship. If you enjoy this one, the story continues in the sequel Sojou No Koi Wa Nido Haneru.
Two in Six Billion By Denzou
Content Warning: Yandere, bullying, self-harm, and suicide.
This feels like a love story full of tragedy and misfit emotions. They shared a connection, but it was never meant to last. Out of six billion people, these two were an unlikely match, destined to meet in a world where they just didn’t belong. Everything about their relationship was off—brief, chaotic, yet strangely captivating.
Norainu no Yoru by Yofune Shibue
Content Warning: sexual content, drug usage.
Norainu no Yoru has an undeniable intensity. It offers a thrilling and provocative connection, perfectly balanced by the lack of power imbalance between the two characters. The protagonists, two men fully aware of their unusual dynamic, embrace it with ease. What’s particularly intriguing is that the Alpha takes on the submissive role.
The Inheritance of Aroma by Nakamura Asumiko
Content Warning: sexual content, infidelity, incest.
The Inheritance of Aroma is bold and unsettling, yet there’s an undeniable allure that pulls you deeper into its dark, tragic, and contradictory narrative. As the title suggests, it has a strange, almost irresistible charm caught up in shame, guilt, and lust. It certainly causes the reader to experience some intense feelings. The theme of incest is central to the story, so it may not be for everyone. But if you’re looking for a read that is beautifully depicted but will leave you feeling deeply uncomfortable, this one might just be for you.
Escape Into Oblivion
Escape Into Oblivion features some of the most unhinged characters on this list—something I never thought possible given the previous themes. I never imagined I’d be so captivated by a man who literally brings me the TEETH of another man who hurt me. This dark romance is brilliantly twisted, a chaotic, delightful ride that grips your senses. The relationships here are doomed from the start—all the characters are headed for inevitable oblivion.
Final Thoughts
I understand that the terms ‘dark romance’ and ‘boy love’ can be controversial, but for me, these stories still explore love—albeit in its complex, flawed, or unhealthy forms. It’s important to remember that the relationships featured here are fictional and often involve manipulative behavior, obsession, or emotional harm. These dynamics should never be part of a healthy, real-life relationship.
